Weeks 5 & 6

Learning Intention: We are learning to identify words we don’t know the meaning of.

Success Criteria:

  • I can write the words I don’t know the meaning of.
  • I can use the pictures to help me problem solve the words.
  • I can use the sentences to help me problem solve the words.
  • I can ask someone to tell me the meaning when I can’t find it in the book.

Independent Reading 15 mins:

  • Read a reader from your Take Home Book Bag
  • Read your Speed Read Sheet x 2 (Cathy and Elisa’s Sounds Write group)
  • Play the /ee/ Four In A Row Game to practise words. (Jane’s Sounds Write Group).

Wushka Online texts  30 mins:

  • Sign into Wushka https://wushka.com.au/login
  • Select a non fiction book from the highest level you have access to.
  • Read the book. As you read you will find words you don’t know the meaning of. Write these words down on a piece of paper to use during the week. Please keep them to use tomorrow.

Read to Parent 10 mins:

  • Read a Wushka Non Fiction book to your parent. Talk about the important information from the book using the subtitles and graphics (pictures, maps, charts or tables, diagrams) to help you.

Webex Check In @ 10:30 am 

This is a time for your child to check in, say hello to their classmates and ask any questions about the activities for the day. A focus will be on the Reading task today – how to identify words we don’t know the meaning of. We will keep the Webex open at the end for an extra 30 mins if any children need to ask for help or have something clarified. Even if you jump out of the meeting, you can jump back in if you think of something.

Spelling Sounds~Write words (20 minutes)

  • Initial code – ‘fish’ sheet – click on the link below for this week’s sheet.

  • Extended Code –  /ee/ Four In A Row
  • Post
  1. Read the word carefully – ‘say the sounds and read the word’.
  2. Cover the word.
  3. Carefully ‘say the sounds and write the word’. 
  4. Check carefully that you have written the word correctly.
  5. If correct, go to the next word. If incorrect, go back and try to write the word again.
  6. Complete as many words as you can in 20 minutes but remember to write neatly.

If your child is struggling with 3 digits, just use 2 cards and make 2 digit numbers. Alternatively, if your child is finding 3 digits easy, give them 4 cards to make 4 digit numbers. 👍

Last week in maths we practised making ‘groups of’. Please see the poster above. This week we are going to practise making arrays. Please see the second poster above. Show your children these when they are working to remind them of the difference. ‘Groups of’ are having separate groups. ‘Arrays’ are putting the groups into rows and columns.

Grade 1:

Use two dice if you have some or choose 2 numbers that are 6 and under (but not 0). Use this sheet to record your number sentence or equation (put it in a plastic pocket so you can use it over and over). Practise 5-6 equations. Send a photo of one to your teacher.
