Listen to picture book for enjoyment

□ Independent Learning Task:

While watching Olympig, take note of who, what, when and where.

After watching, write a worded summary explaining the story (in about 4-5 sentences).

You could use the following prompts:

  • In the beginning..
  • After that…
  • At the end…

Remember to imagine that we haven’t read the book before. Make sure you include all the key details to retell the story.

EXTENSION TASK (optional): Read the article titled, The Olympic Games and answer the comprehension questions. The article and worksheet can be found on Seesaw ready for you to fill in.


□ Spelling Fluency (10 minutes):

One spelling, different sounds Read and sort words by sound.

Draw 2 columns in your homework book. One column will be for the words in which the letter s makes an ‘s’ sound, the other column will be for words in which the letter s makes the ‘z’ sound. Sort your spelling words.

Using the Athlete Profile sheet on Seesaw, or by creating your own poster, write a profile of your favourite Olympic Athlete.

Olympic Maths

You are in the Olympic team for long jump. You have 3 attempts to make the longest jump you can. Mark your starting point, make your jump, measure your jump. Repeat 3 times and then add these together to find your total score. Show your working out and upload it to Seesaw. Your teacher will announce the winner at the end of the day!

Attempt 2 = 71cm

Attempt 3 = 60cm

Total= 198cm


OLYMPIC FUN AT HOME – OPTIONAL EXTRAS!

  • Design a team uniform. Draw what it will look like.
  • Create your own sports to play in a family Olympic Games. Some examples are toy toss, long jump, relays, straw javelin throw etc.
  • Make medals and give them to people at home who deserve one!
  • Time yourself running a 100 meter sprint. What is your best time?
  • Film yourself commentating your favourite sport

You could make predictions about a character’s traits, genre, the problem, the ending, type of text, supporting characters etc.

Object Description

What is the item in your story? What is it used for? Is your main character searching for the item or is the item helping your main character on their quest? Write a paragraph describing your item. Remember to show, don’t tell!

Example:

It wasn’t special to look at. It didn’t glisten, it didn’t shine. But you felt the magic that surrounded it. Perfectly rounded, wooden oak beads draped around the neck. Heavy in the middle was a imperfect oval ruby. It was dull, but if you looked close enough you could see movement like twinkling stars.
