Remote Learning – Thursday 9th September

✔There will be NO Assessment Task Today.

📚Reading📚

Click on the link below if you would like to print off a copy of the Home Learning Log for Weeks 9 & 10.

Weeks 9 & 10

Learning Intention: We are learning to compare and contrast (similar and different) ideas in a non-fiction text

Success Criteria: I can:

  • Select two ideas in the text to compare and contrast.
  • Talk about how these two ideas are the same.
  • Talk about how these two ideas are different.
  • Record the similarities in a venn diagram.
  • Record the differences in a venn diagram.

Independent Reading 15 mins:

Wushka reading task:  30 – 40 mins:

  1. Sign into Wushka https://wushka.com.au/login
  2. Select one of the five Wushka Non Fiction book that your teacher has set for you in Reading Groups (Cats, Rabbits, Horses & Lizards). It is in your levelled library. Only read one book of these assigned books each day. Please note that the books are the same as last week. (As we are looking at a different comprehension strategy it is useful to read familiar books, so the children can concentrate on the new strategy, rather than unfamiliar words or ideas.)
  3. Read the text.
  4. Think about two ideas to compare that are on the same page, or over two pages so you can flick between the two.
  5. Talk to your parent about how two ideas in the text are similar. Record these on the Venn diagram.
  6. Talk to your parent about how these two ideas are different. Record these on the Venn diagram.

🔢Maths🔢 – 30 minutes

Learning Intention: We are learning to understand multiplication as equal groups, arrays, repeated addition and skip counting and practice these strategies in games.

Success Criteria – I can:

  • Understand how to ‘read’ a multiplication sum. (3 x 4 = 12, “3 groups of 4 is 12”)
  • Make equal groups or arrays to match a multiplication sum.
  • Write the repeated addition sum to match the sum.
  • Skip count to work out the answer.
  • Understand that the numbers in a multiplication sum can be ‘swapped over’ ( eg:3 x 4 = 4 x 3) and use ‘commutative property’ to help me work out the answer. (Know one, know the other)

Warm upLinking skip counting and times tables (Creating a ‘cheat sheet’)

Click on the link below to download a sheet to record the skip counting pattern and sums for the 4 times tables, or use it as an example to create your own sheet.

Helpful hint: You can skip count by 4’s by ‘whisper counting’ using the 2’s pattern. Eg: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20

Cheat sheet – skip counting and times tables

Independent Tasks:

Grade 1: Practicing the 4 times tables (15 minutes)

Task 1: Click on the link below. Print the game board. Get 2 counters and a dice to play. Get Mum or Dad to play with you. You will be practicing your 4 x tables today. Keep your ‘cheat sheet’ close by for help in answering the times tables sums in the game.

🔢Maths🔢 – 30 minutes

Learning Intention: We are learning to understand MASS in measurement.

Mass is the amount of matter or substance that makes up an object. It is measured in units for example kilograms, which can be abbreviated as kg.

Success Criteria – I can:

  • Understand how to ‘read’ measurements like grams, kilograms, millilitres and litres
  • Follow instructions/recipe to make something involving measuring equipment
  • Weigh objects and determine which is heavier or lighter
  • Use hefting to estimate or test the weight of something by holding or lifting it.

Warm upMultiplication: Give me 5

Please see the example below for how to fill out the ‘Give me 5’ sheet:

Grade 1: Give me 5

Click on the link to select your numbers – Spinner

Use the image below as a guide to draw up 4 boxes to record your work and remember to write the equation in the middle of the page. (Put it in a plastic pocket so you can use it over and over). Practise 2 equations.

Grade 2: Give me 5

Use the image below as a guide to draw up 4 boxes to record your work and remember to write the equation in the middle of the page. (Put it in a plastic pocket so you can use it over and over). Practise 2 equations.

Watch the following video about Mass:

Independent Tasks:

– Demonstrate how you could ‘heft’ different objects by holding one in each hand to determine which one is heavier

– Collect a variety of objects from around the house. Once collected, select an object that you think would be heavier than or lighter than say a drink bottle or can of food. Experiment with hefting, comparing how objects feel in each hand.

– Repeat a few times with different objects.

Last week in maths we practised making ‘groups of’. Please see the poster above. This week we are going to practise making arrays. Please see the second poster above. Show your children these when they are working to remind them of the difference. ‘Groups of’ are having separate groups. ‘Arrays’ are putting the groups into rows and columns.

Watch the video below for an explanation of the term ‘array’.

📝Writing📝

Information Report – Writing descriptive sentences

Watch the video about foxes:

Please get out your fox diagram from your pack. Use this diagram and your labels to write descriptive sentences about foxes.

Year One:

Try to vary your sentence starters so you are not starting with the same words each time. Eg. Dogs have four padded feet. Their tails are long and fluffy.

Use your labelled fox diagram to write sentences that clearly describe what a fox looks like. Please use the lined paper provided in your child’s take home book bag. We would like the diagram and writing to be handed to the teacher when school resumes.

Year Two:

Try to vary your sentence starters so you are not starting with the same words each time. Eg. Dogs have four padded feet. Their tails are long and fluffy.

Use your labelled fox diagram to write sentences that clearly describe what a fox looks like. Please use the lined paper provided in your child’s take home book bag. We would like the diagram and writing to be handed to the teacher when school resumes.
